History:

The history of the Methodist Church in Marysville begins in 1870. Ulysses S. Grant was President of the United States, and the great War Between the States, which had devastated vast areas of the country and inflicted more than 600,000 casualties, was five years in the past. The town of Marysville had been incorporated in 1866, and already had five Protestant churches by 1870, when The Marysville Methodist Church was organized as a congregation of the American Methodist Episcopal Church. Fifteen members met in a small school house on the river bank at about 300 South Main Street, under the leadership of Reverend Cambridge Graham from the Duncannon Methodist Church. Over the course of the next three years, the congregation of the Marysville Methodist Church grew in size and began construction of their meeting house.

On May 26, 1972, a fire destroyed the property at 202 Maple Avenue. The Wesley congregation held worship services at Bethany United Methodist Church pending a decision about Wesley's future. Although a union of the two Marysville United Methodist congregations was contemplated, the members of Wesley United Methodist Church ultimately decided that the spiritual growth of the community of Marysville depended on two active United Methodist congregations. Accordingly, construction of the new church facility, on a 12.45 acre tract of land located west of Sylvan Street, was begun on July 8, 1974.A physical fire destroyed the building and yet a spiritual fire built a new Church. For within the people of Wesley burns a fire of dedication and devotion that had grown dim. Now it burns with a new vigor." The cross and flame symbol of the United Methodist Church will always have a special symbolism for the congregation of Wesley United Methodist Church in Marysville.
