Taylor Brook Coalition

Taylor Brook Coalition, P.O. Box 185

The Taylor Brook Coalition is a citizen's civic group created to preserve land in Maynard. In addition to preserving land, we would like to limit further abuse of natural resources in Maynard. Primarily, we are concerned about new construction on currently undisturbed land.

Taylor Brook Coalition began as a reaction to a development plan of approximately 6 acres of property near Taylor Brook in Maynard. Taylor Brook is located in an undisturbed and wooded area out behind Taylor Brook Road and Boeske Avenue. (In between the Green Meadow School and the DPW off Winter Street). In 2000, a land developer purchased the property and given the currently zoning laws in Maynard (1/4 acre for a single family home), we projected that the developer may be able to demolish the fully wooded area and put in approximately 15 to 17 new homes.

We were concerned about this potential development as the land is currently home to many deer, raccoons, birds, turtles and other wildlife. In addition, the "Taylor Road Trust" property, as it is now called, contains many vernal ponds that would be destroyed.

Currently the Taylor Road Trust property remains undeveloped. One 1/4 acre lot out of the entire 6 acres (which did not require any planning board approval) now has a brand new home on it waiting to be sold on Boeske Avenue, but no major development plans on the large part of the property have been submitted to the Maynard Town Planning Board.

In addition to trying to preserve the Taylor Road Trust property in Maynard, the TBC has been playing an active role in trying to limit development of a small amount of property off of Rt 117 (across from Percival Street) known as Keene Ave. Keene Ave is called a "paper road", as it was added to town maps many years ago when town planners were determining what parts of the town should have roads and homes. Currently there is no physical road called Keene Ave, but recently a developer was proprosing to finally make the road and put several homes on it. To date, the plans have been withdrawn and TBC is working in conjunction with the developer to create a win-win situation both for the developer to make money and for green space to be preserved.
