Scottsville Center For Arts And Nature

About Us:

The Scottsville Center for Arts and Nature (SCAN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to arts education, the preservation of local culture, and fostering stewardship for the land.

Imagine a place where individuals and families can explore their artistic potential, form creative partnerships, develop skills, and foster a passion for the arts, nature, and lifelong learning.

SCAN is an evolution of Mary Hardy Robert's "Family Players" music program which is geared toward intergenerational teaching. Music offerings include group classes, ensemble playing, and the community orchestra--all for a variety of musical genres.

For over a year-and-a-half, SCAN has hosted an Acoustic Jam where players come together for a lively night of Old Time, Bluegrass, and Gospel music. The jam sessions mark the beginnings of the preservation of musical traditions which mark the culture of Central Virginia.

In 2005, Robert K. Spencer, a lifelong resident of Scottsville, generously donated land for the Scottsville Center for Arts and Nature. Plans are underway to design and build this new cultural hub. When built, the greater Scottsville area comprised of Southern Albemarle, Buckingham, Nelson, and Fluvanna will have a comprehensive educational center devoted to individuals and families, and to the promotion of existing arts and nature organizations.
