Rotary Club of Hingham and Hull

274 South Street

The Rotary Club of Hingham was established in 1933. The Club, which serves both Hingham and Hull, was sponsored by the Weymouth Rotary Club. In turn, The Hingham Club sponsored both the Cohasset and Scituate Clubs in 1941 and 1962, respectively. Over the years the Club has meet at the Agricultural Hall (razed in 1949), the Cushing House, the Community Center and the South Shore Country Club, which is where meetings are now held each Thursday evening at 6:15pm.

The focus of Rotary Club is service to others and the Hingham Club has a longstanding history of service to both the communities of Hingham and Hull as well as the international community. In the early years of the Club the sponsorship of the local Boy Scout troop was a major undertaking. Soon, followed funding for numerous youth sports programs. In 1962, the Rotary Telephone Directory project was started and to this day remains the cornerstone of fundraising work of the Club. In the early 90's member Sheldon Daly started the Rotary Craft Show, held on the first Saturday in June at the Bathing Beach. Another Club project for many years has been contributing to the Fourth of July Parade. Rotarians work the parade route each year seeking donations and awarding buttons to parade attendees. The funds collected are contributed to the next year's parade.

The Rotary Club awards $10,000 in scholarships annually to Hull and Hingham seniors. Rotary is a major contributor to the DARE program. Rotary also donates money to numerous local organizations and worthwhile causes. On the international level, the Club has contributed in a significant way to Central America, providing medical equipment for several years and emergency assistance following Hurricane Mitch in 1998.
