The Jaffrey–Rindge Inclusive Preschool believes in a developmentally appropriate approach with children. That is, children are not expected to sit for long periods of time without a chance to move. The curriculum is taught through play. Arts and crafts activities are developed by teachers but accomplished by the children. Materials are designed to be used creatively.

We consider ourselves a language–intensive preschool. This means that there are always lots of books, pictures, activities and emotions being discussed. It’s rarely quiet here!

The classroom rules are designed with input from the children. They are discussed regularly as a way to reinforce safe behaviors.

Children are encouraged to make choices, express their desires and needs, and use materials creatively but constructively. None of us are perfect however, so when the children make poor choices a “think and sit” time is made available as a way to help children “get back into control.”

Our curriculum takes into consideration the social/emotional abilities of each child. It also considers the self–help, fine and gross motor, communication, and cognitive (thinking) abilities of the children.

It is believed that all children should be respected for who they are as individuals. Therefore, disabilities are discussed openly and honestly with the children. With that information the children can best understand why everyone is different, but how everyone is the same, and why everyone.
