Horizons for Homeless Children (West Region)

Our Mission: Horizons for Homeless Children is one of the few organizations in Massachusetts focused exclusively on the needs of young homeless children and their families. We are recognized as a national leader in the education of homeless children. Today, we provide high-quality early education (in our Boston-based early education centers), opportunities for play (in regional Playspaces across Massachuestts), and family support services to more than 2,000 homeless children each week in Massachusetts.

Our Playspace Program ensures that children living in family homeless shelters in Massachusetts have the opportunity for developmentally appropriate play. We build educational spaces in shelters and stock them with books, toys, and art supplies. Our Playspace Activity Leaders (PALs) have a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in the children's lives by providing them the opportunities for play that are critical for learning and growth. The majority of our shifts take place Monday through Thursday, both daytime but mostly evening shifts available.

We are looking for committed and dependable volunteers who:

  • Can commit 2 hours a week to volunteering at the same time, same location.
  • Can commit 6 months or more to volunteering as a PAL.
  • Are at least 16 years old. If you are under 18, however, you will need a guardian to both attend the training and volunteer with you.
  • Can attend a one-time, 3 hour training that covers everything from homelessness on a state and local level to early childhood development.

PAL trainings are held regularly. For more information call (413) 532-0467 or apply online today at www.horizonschildren.org/playspace.
