About Us:

We are part of a denomination called the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). We like to call ourselves Disciples. You can identify us by the red chalice with the St. Andrew's Cross on our church sign. This mainline Protestant denomination centers faith not in a creed but in Christ, allowing plenty of room for differing personal beliefs. Membership is by faith in Christ and baptism. Worship is familiar and comfortable to a wide range of persons of differing religious backgrounds. Faith in Christ is renewed each Sunday through sharing in Communion around the Lord's table. We are often referred to as "people of the chalice" because of our high regard for sharing in the Lord's Supper. Communion is truly the Disciples' centerpiece, shared every time we gather to worship. Hence, Disciples are a table-focused, not pulpit-focused, people. That is why we are "home" to so many people representing a variety of backgrounds, opinions, and beliefs. At one time, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was the largest American-born religious movement in the country. Today, we have more than 3800 congregations in the United States and Canada, as well as missionary enterprises around the world. However, the "cradle of Disciples" is Kentucky, and 237 Disciples congregations are located in Kentucky. Also located in the state is one of our larger seminaries, Lexington Theological Seminary, as well as two institutions of higher learning, Transylvania University and Midway College.

History:

The Harrodsburg Christian Church is the oldest continuous congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), chartered in 1803 and even pre-dating the denomination by several years. With ties to Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) founders Barton Stone (Kentucky) and Alexander Campbell (West Virginia), Harrodsburg Christian was one of the original churches of the Springfield Presbytery. One cannot tell the story of HCC without including such notable institutions as Bacon College (now Transylvania University), the College of the Bible (now Lexington Theological Seminary), and Kentucky University (now University of Kentucky). Harrodsburg Christian Church played a prominent role in the life of all three of those educational facilities. In fact, Bacon College President James Shannon and Professor Samuel Hatch served as the church's first two regular preachers while the college was still located in Harrodsburg.

The current church was built in 1927. To prepare for our Bicentennial Celebration in 2003, a $1.4 million renovation was initiated in 1998 and completed in 2002. It has been said that each generation builds on the accomplishments of the prior generation. The Harrodsburg Christian Church has had a vivid past with a membership that has sacrificed much to support the Lord's work in Harrodsburg and beyond. A long-line of distinguished ministers have shepherded the congregation, serving as our spiritual guides. Today, Harrodsburg Christian Church is truly "embracing our past and touching the future" as we begin our third century of Lord's work. Indeed, a storied past, but it's our vibrant present and future that distinguishes us. Our Church life is characterized by freedom, under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. A very important slogan used by Disciples through the years, governs our relationship to one another: "In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, love." Come celebrate Jesus with us!
