Mission

To create a safe learning environment in which every student feels valued, and an educational process that advocates for the application of knowledge while empowering students with goals, choices, and strategies.

History

The Independent Study Program started in 1987 with an administrator and one paraprofessional. The first classes were taught out of the Catholic Church in Georgetown, California. Within one year, the program had grown so large that an additional paraprofessional was hired. With the number of staff and students increasing, the program was moved into a trailer behind Divide High School in 1988. It served students between kindergarten and twelfth grade. There were also special classes for adults.

In 1993, Independent Study moved to the California Conservation Corps Camp in Greenwood, California. The students and teachers shared the administrative building with the C.C.C. With the addition of new teachers and students, a new building was constructed to house the ever-growing enrollment. The ribbon was cut in November of 1999, starting a new chapter for the Independent Study Program.
