History

The Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity, Inc. was incorporated by the Texas Secretary of State as a nonprofit corporation and an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International on March 31, 1994.

Habitat for Humanity, International’s goal is to “eliminate poverty housing from the face of the earth.” The mission of Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity is to accomplish Habitat for Humanity International’s mission in the Fort Hood area. Habitat builds and sells homes to low-income families who do not have an adequate place to live, but are willing to work hard (sweat equity) to improve themselves and the opportunities for their children.

Habitat for Humanity, International, operating in nearly 100 countries around the world, has built over 200,000 homes and is currently housing over 1 million people. A Habitat home is completed some where in the world every 24 minutes. In the United States, about 5,000 Habitat homes are built each year.

Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity, Inc. built its first home in 1995. In March of 2006, Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity combined with Belton/Temple Habitat for Humanity. The resulting combined Habitat affiliate serves the cities of Belton, Copperas Cove, Harker Heights, Killeen, Nolanville and Temple. Since 1994 these Habitat affiliates have built in these cities 44 homes housing over 200 family members. Currently Habitat has four other homes under different phases of construction; one in Belton, two in Killeen, and one in Temple. Habitat has already completed one home in Copperas Cove this year and expects to complete six in the area by the end of the year.
