Duxbury Student Union Association

147 St. George Street

The Duxbury Student Union Association (DSUA) was founded in 2002 by a group of Duxbury parents to provide programs and activities of a social, academic, and leadership nature (after school and weekends) to help reduce the high level of risky behaviors by the youth of Duxbury. Our efforts have resulted in the Town assigning 7,700 square feet of centrally located space in the Wright Building (former library) to start a privately funded youth center (“Student Union”) for the Town, with occupancy available in November 2006. We now seek to privately raise $500,00 to fund 3 years of start-up, capital, and operating costs for the operation of the Student Union.

Vision:

The "vision" is to turn the out-of-school hours of our middle and high school youth into attractive, growth-promoting opportunities. We hope to accomplish this goal by establishing a Student Union, centrally located on our school campus, similar to a Student Union one would find on a college campus. The location of the Wright Building affords the unique opportunity to provide a Teen Center to our students just steps away from school, accessible afternoons and evenings, useful to the student who may only have a few minutes to "drop in" and socialize in between school and practice, as well as the student who, instead of going home to an empty house, has opportunities to spend several hours socializing, studying, or becoming involved in a developmental or professional program, all in a safe, supervised environment. Fashioning the Wright Building after a typical college Student Union, the Center would serve as a central source of student social life, communication, and outreach. These categories would break down in the following ways.

To turn the out-of-school hours for our middle and high school young people into
attractive, growth promoting opportunities through socially responsible leadership
and professional development.

Mission Statement:

The Student Union, through partnership with the community, will provide the young people of Duxbury in grades 6 through 12 a place to spend quality time with their friends, to socialize and pursue activities of special interest in a comfortable, safe and fun environment. Students will be encouraged to show mutual support socially, emotionally, and educationally.
