The district's fundamental mission continues into the Twenty-first Century. The Delaware City Schools will engage all students in meaningful learning experiences that prepare them to be productive members of our free and democratic society.

The district has adopted and is implementing a Continuous Improvement Plan to focus the district's efforts to achieve its mission and vision. The plan contains four goals: maximizing student and staff performance; improving students' literacy/reading skills; improving students' math skills; maintaining a safe and supportive learning and working environment.

The Delaware City School district lies within the City of Delaware and Delaware and Troy Townships. Thirty miles north of downtown Columbus, Delaware sits almost in the dead center of the state. Delaware is located in one of the fastest growing counties in the country. The district covers 36 square miles of land. The city population is approximately 29,000 and growing between 7 and 9% per year.

The Delaware City School district operates five neighborhood elementary schools serving students Pre-K through 4, an intermediate building for students in grades 5 and 6, a 7 and 8 middle school, and a 9-12 high school. The district also staffs a technology center. Administrative services and transportation are housed in separate facilities.

The student body reflects the community's diversity. Of the approximately 4500 students enrolled in the district, 90% are white-non-Hispanic; 4.1% are African American, 3% are multi-racial, 1.6% is Hispanic, .8% is Asian or Pacific Islander. 1% is described as limited English proficient.

The district currently employs 567 staff members: 306 certificated employees and 234 classified employees. The average years of experience for a teacher is 17. 56% of teachers hold a masters degree or higher. The average teacher salary is $46,000.

General fund revenues for 2004-05 are $34,309,980. Local taxes make up 60% of general fund receipts. State funds equal 39% and federal funds about 1% of revenue.

The district and all eight schools are accredited through the North Central Association accreditation process.
