Dan Emmett Elementary School was built in 1950, named for Daniel Decatur Emmett (the author of Dixie) who was born in Mount Vernon. The south wing of Dan Emmett School was added to the building in 1988.  The building houses students in grades kindergarten through fifth. Dan Emmett School enrolls approximately 300 students, with 45 staff.

Vision statement: All children will be successful.

Mission statement: Students will engage in learning activities suited to their needs, interests, and abilities.

Mascot: Tiger
