Cape Ann Whale Watch

History:-

Cape Ann Whale Watch was founded by Captain Fred Douglass in 1979.

Captain Fred was the pioneer of whale watching in Gloucester, MA on his small but popular sightseeing tour boat. Gloucester, a fishing community located just north of Boston, has long been a popular destination for site-seeing and currently, whale watching. Fred began back in 1978 when he was taking Gloucester visitors on trips to watch the local fishermen at work. Whales would often be sighted on these trips, and Fred realized that his passengers were fascinated by these gentle giants of the ocean. Gloucester whale watching has been great way for people to see and learn about the whales.

In 1979 Fred brought approximately 600 passengers on designated “whale watching” trips aboard the 42 foot “Daunty” (named for Fred’s father, the fearless “Daunty” Douglass), and the rest is history.

Cape Ann Whale Watch, the company founded by Captain Fred, now enters our 35th season. The company is now owned and operated by Fred’s son, Captain Jim Douglass, and his business partner Captain Nick Danikas. Cape Ann Whale Watch is the area’s most popular whale watch, and it has carried more than half a million passengers to view the whales of Stellwagen Bank. Only our passengers enjoy the unique speed and comfort of the “Hurricane II”, the largest, fastest whale watch vessel in Gloucester. Only our passengers engage with multiple educators throughout the ride to and from the whales. We pride ourselves on providing our passengers with the best possible whale watching experience, and look forward to seeing you aboard this season.
