Califorina Lane Church Of Christ

1906 California Lane
817-465-4749

The congregation was established in September 1957 with the Travis Allen, Arch Ferguson, Clifford Blair and James Davis families. Quinton Gage held the first 10-day meeting in which some 40 people expressed the desire to be "charter members" of this new effort. Members met in a facility at 1919 S. Cooper Street for the first number of years. For future growth a new facility was desired, and property on California Lane was purchased from Norvell and Cleo Davis in 1973. On December 21st 1975 the first services in the present location were conducted.

Delbert Smith served as the first full time evangelist beginning in 1963. During this period, February 1965,the first elders and deacons were installed in an ordination service conducted by Van Bonneau. Delos Johnson began his work with the congregation in 1966, and served as minister and elder for the church for 26 years. Delos and Sammie then moved to Quitaque, Texas to retire on a family property. David Kelley began his work as minister in September 1989 and continues to this day.

A Family Center was added to the facilities in 1994 and has been a blessing to the church and surrounding community.

Four qualities which have been outstanding with this group of disciples:

First... From the beginning members have enjoyed a warm fellowship with churches in the area. California Lane has a loving spirit and good reputation in the community.

Second... A love of singing has been a trademark of the congregation. Some of the finest song leaders in the brotherhood including: Larry and David Carrell, have led hymns here. Ala Mae Carrell, their mother, continues to worship with the congregation. Ron Morgan teaches and uplifts our spirits with "Songs of Faith and Praise."

Third... Concern for the poor and sick is another historic attribute of this group of disciples. A continual outpouring of food, clothing, and other gifts to the needy has been a standard practice. Local welfare officials and civic leaders have know this congregation for its generosity. The Berean Family Home has, and continues to receive support from this church. Arlington Charities uses our Family Center each year to help with the "Annual Church Food Drive."

Fourth... Mission work, from the early 60's, and before the group felt it could really afford it, has been a priority Today, along with the Lockney Church of Christ, Roberto Lara and family, are supported in the Lord's work in Moroleon GTO, Mexico. Contributions are also made to other brotherhood mission efforts on a regular basis. We hope this short history of California Lane Church of Christ helps any who might inquire concerning the church, it's worship and work.
