Upcoming Changes To The Library’s Hoopla Digital Service

Schools and Libraries

October 5, 2023

From: Wethersfield Library

Hoopla has proven to be a very popular resource with Library patrons. As Hoopla’s popularity grows, however, so does its cost. Hoopla operates on a pay-per-use model, which is unlike the borrowing model for many of our other resources. Each time someone checks out a title on Hoopla, the Library is billed. Different titles cost different amounts, but the most popular titles tend to cost the most money. This pricing model makes it very difficult to control or predict our costs and could easily cause us to exceed the Library’s budget for digital materials.

In an attempt to continue to offer Hoopla while moderating its cost, effective November 1, 2023 the Library will be reducing the number of monthly Hoopla checkouts permitted per patron from ten to four. We hope this reduction will result in sufficient cost reduction that the Library will be able continue

Hoopla service; unfortunately, it is possible that in the future even further limitations may need to be placed on patron usage or on the number of Hoopla titles offered.

The Library’s is constantly evaluating resources to make sure that we are purchasing what our community wants and needs for the best price we can possibly get. To ensure this goal is reached sometimes requires difficult decisions be made. This is one of those difficult decisions.

We understand that this will be frustrating and disappointing to our Hoopla users. However, as the cost of everything rises, we hope that you understand why we have made the decision that we did.
