The Springfield City Library along with Mayor Sarno and the Library Commission is happy to announce that effective immediately, overdue fines will no longer accrue on books and other circulating materials and past late fines will be eliminated entirely. The announcement comes as the Library kicks off its annual Summer Reading Club to help commemorate the monumental celebration and encourage city residents to come back into the buildings and get rewarded with raffles and prizes for reading during the months of July and August.

The decision to go fine-free has been made in an effort to eliminate barriers to access and ensure that all Springfield residents have free, equitable, and open access to knowledge and opportunity. It comes just in time to welcome all children, teens, and adults who want to come back into the buildings to join in on Summer Reading Club. The Springfield City Library is joining other library systems across the country and is proud to be amongst these pioneers in practices that not only have eliminated fines but also barriers for its community members.
