Leadership Exchange in Arts and Disability (LEAD)

At the end of August, Directors Mark and Melissa Roxey attended the LEAD conference in Boston where they participated in a multi-day program that advances the full inclusion of people with disabilities in arts and culture. Since the inception of Roxey Ballet and Mill Ballet School, Mark and Melissa have been passionate about making dance education and performance accessible for all. The program provides the opportunity for professionals to connect with colleagues, develop resources and best practices, and learn practical methods for designing inclusive experiences.

Travis Manion Heroes Run

On Sunday, October 8, Mill Ballet School Trainees will perform at the opening ceremony of the annual Travis Manion Heroes Run, honoring the service and sacrifice of first responders and veterans on 9/11 and the wars since. All are invited to attend and are encouraged to participate in the run. Information and registration can be found here.

Travis Manion, 1stLt, USMC, lost his life in 2007 in an ambush along with his fellow marines during the Iraq War. Travis was the cousin of Mill Ballet School graduate Emma Manion and believed in living a life of service. The Travis Manion Foundation was established in his honor and their mission is to empower veterans and families of fallen heroes to develop character in future generations. The annual Heroes Run is just one of the ways the foundation serves communities. Learn more here.

Caitlyn Kresky on the Importance of Progressive Contemporary Technique

Catilyn Kresky recently completed a class in Progressing Contemporary Technique (PCP), a curriculum of exercises that complements contemporary training and further educates students on the principles of contemporary movement. Caitlyn will incorporate what she learned from the course in her classes to help students better understand the contemporary style of movement. The PCP exercises are choreographed to music and encourage the flow of transitions between steps. Completing these PCP exercises will help students feel certain concepts such as release, feeling grounded, utilizing the entire body, weight transfer, coordination, contraction/high release, and more. Students will learn how and when to engage specific muscles and release others in order to best support their contemporary choreography with strength. Caitlyn is looking forward to completing the PBT training soon to add new exercises and an even greater focus on ballet into my dance conditioning/Pilates classes.

Dancer Wellness Workshop

On Wednesday, participating students ages 10 and up enjoyed a Wellness Workshop featuring dance physical therapist Holly Burns teaching exercises with a focus on injury prevention, and former professional dancer and nutrition expert Julia Cobble speaking on the topic of self-care, making healthy food choices, and the importance of rest for dancers. An informative and productive way to begin this new season of dance!
