It's been one week since I witnessed Claflin Hill's performance of The Quartet for the End of Time...

… and yet… the experience lingers.

The musicians put their hearts and souls into the performance.

After viewing the recording, Paul said, “That's about the best thing I’ve ever done.”

From my perspective in the audience, it was an emotionally moving show.

No, I didn't have to spend hours in rehearsal. Instead, I prepared by listening to a few different recordings on my Spotify account.

And I designed the slideshow and made last-minute edits to enhance the audience's experience.

 - It’s easy to sit passively and let the music wash over you.
 - It's easy to be complacent and assume it will always be there.
 - It's easy to think, 'Well if this doesn't work out, there will be other concerts to go to.’

But that’s just not true.

If you're reading this message today, you know that Claflin Hill is unique.

Over the past 23 years, our patrons have come to know the musicians. You know Lori and Chip, the piccolo and tuba players, who also happen to be husband and wife.

You know Jagan Nath, in the violin section, with his colorful turban.

You know Warren, Teri, Phyllis, Angel, Johan, Ella, Lynne, Erich, Dimitar, and many others who have been with this fine orchestra for over two decades. Indeed, a few named here were on the roster for Carmina Burana on that sweltering Sunday evening—May 7, 2000.

And our musicians know you, too. They gaze out into the audience and they know The Judge and Virginia Larkin sitting in the front row. They know Debrah & Michael, Jackie, Tom & Rebecca, Tim, Norman, Geri & Steve, Sue Ellen & Robert, and many, many others.

The uniqueness of Claflin Hill IS the community of talented artists and eager audience members.

And even if you have NEVER attended a symphony concert, you still appreciate that this community supports a lively arts organization.

Olivier Messiaen wrote The Quartet for the End of Time while imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp.

Despite the horrors of the war and the conditions, Messiaen believed there is an essence that transcends the physical body.

This piece of music tells that story as only music can.

As supporters of Claflin Hill, we must step up and donate to ensure that our children, and our children's children, also have the opportunity to hear stellar live performances even in the suburbs.
