GOP Senate Candidates Attack Brown Over His Strong Support for Turning Nevada Into a Nuclear Waste Dumping Ground

Brown is the ONLY candidate in the messy MAGA primary who wants to restart Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository

Mitch McConnell’s handpicked candidate Sam Brown continues to face fierce backlash over his strong support for storing the nation’s nuclear waste in Nevada. New reporting from the Las Vegas Review-Journal shows that Brown is now the ONLY candidate in the messy MAGA primary who supports restarting Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository, as his primary opponents attacked him on social media, the debate stage and via ads over his toxic position.

Yesterday, former Trump Ambassador Jeff Gunter launched a new attack ad against Brown over his strong support for Yucca Mountain. In the ad, Gunter calls out Brown for planning to dump “toxic nuclear waste into Nevada, just miles away from schools,” and selling out to Mitch McConnell. Gunter has also repeatedly attacked Brown on social media for his toxic stance on Yucca Mountain.

In the last few weeks, critics and media outlets have also observed that Brown’s toxic stance “could roil Nevada U.S. Senate race,” and called his position “not very aware,” “reckless,” and “politically damaging.”

  • Nevada GOP Senate candidate Jeff Gunter hit primary rival Sam Brown on Tuesday over his previous comments showing openness to funding the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste facility.
  • “If we don’t act soon, other states … are assessing whether or not they can essentially steal that opportunity from us,” [Brown] said in a recording, first obtained by The Los Angeles Times.
  • Gunter, the former ambassador to Iceland, attacked “Scam Brown” over the comments in a social media blitz and new campaign ad on Tuesday, with just weeks to go before the June 11 primary.
  • “Scam Brown is scheming to make Nevada a dumping ground for toxic nuclear waste, just miles away from schools,” Gunter said. “President Trump & I oppose the swamp’s Yucca plan. Mitch McConnell and Scam support it.”
  • “Scam Brown doubles down on dumping hazardous nuclear waste in Nevada,” Gunter said in a second post. “Toxic policy. Toxic message. Toxic campaign.”
  • The intra-party attack comes as the primary heats up. Support for Yucca Mountain development is an unpopular policy in much of the state, and even openness to future development could threaten Brown’s campaign.
