What is Yiddish dance?
‍Yiddish dance describes the traditional folk dances done to Klezmer music (the folk music developed among Ashkenazi Jews in Eastern Europe). Klezmer today reflects centuries of cultural exchange. Stemming from roots in Ashkenazi Jewish musical modes and expressive sensibilities, Klezmer adapted influences from Eastern European, Balkan, and Ottoman music. In recent history, it has even incorporated elements of Jazz and other styles here in America. Klezmer and Yiddish dance hold many stories and rich cultural information that depict just one branch of the Jewish Diaspora, and so beautifully demonstrate moments throughout our history when people of different communities have come together through celebration, music, and dance — so let's do just that as part of the Foundry Festival!
