U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Event

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site
November 13 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Every year, a different national forest is selected to provide a tree to appear on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol building for the holiday season, and the 2022 tree will come from a national forest in North Carolina.

Beginning on November 5 this red spruce giant will kick off its journey in the Town of Murphy and make 14 stops in local North Carolina communities from the mountains to the sea over the course of two weeks. The Town of Manteo is the final stop on the tree’s journey in North Carolina and will help host a celebration event to be held on Sunday, November 13 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.

The Manteo Library will be in attendance with a booth where the whole family can decorate a Christmas tree ornament to take home. There will also be a special Christmas book for everyone to sign that will be sent to Washington, D.C., with the tree.

Holiday Fun in Hatteras
Saturday, December 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Come join the Hatteras Library staff at the Hatteras Library for an "Elf on the Shelf" hunt, Christmas books, prizes and fun. We'll celebrate with family fun and crafts. Children will also get to sign holiday cards for seniors.

Library Spotlight

On October 17, the Dare County Library launched a Seed Library, which is accessible at the Hatteras, Kill Devil Hills and Manteo locations.

Our Seed Library provides a variety of vegetable, herb, flower and plant seeds that are available for free to "check out" with the intention of growing them locally. Guidance will be available on how to grow plants from seeds. After the plant has matured, growers are encouraged to harvest and donate some of their seeds back – thus making our Seed Library truly local and sustainable. The long-term goal is to give locals access to plant varieties that grow and thrive on the Outer Banks while also providing the knowledge to maintain kitchen gardens and reduce household overhead.

Come by any of our Dare County Library locations to learn more or click the link below to our online guide that features checkout and donation information, books, handouts, resources and a link to our seed inventory.

Dare County Library Seed Library Program

Join us for the Drive-Thru to Fight the Flu Clinic at Manteo Library

Wednesday, November 2 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

In partnership with The Outer Banks Hospital, the Dare County Library is hosting a series of drive-through flu clinics at our locations this fall.

Participants must be between the ages of 18 and 64 to receive a vaccine. Appointments are required. To make an appointment, please call 252-449-4529.

A future clinic will be held at the Kill Devil Hills Library on December 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Toys for Tots Drive at the Kill Devil Hills Library

Through December 5, you can drop off clean, unwrapped toys at the front desk of the Kill Devil Hills Library.

According to their website, "Toys for Tots, Dare and Currituck Counties, is a unit of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Foundation. All involved at the local level are 100 percent volunteer. Funds and toys collected locally are used locally. Our goal is to ensure that no child is left out on Christmas. Through collection events, fundraising, and donations, we collect and buy toys for newborns to 16 years of age, from Moyock to Hatteras and anywhere in between."

Angel Gift Program at the Manteo Library
To bring smiles to local children in need this Christmas, the Outer Banks Woman’s Club Angel Gift Program is underway. The Angel Gift Program has been providing gifts to children in need in the community since 1987. You can participate by removing one or more “angels” (containing child requests) from trees that will be on display at the Manteo Library through December 5. Call or come by to learn more.
