Geometry with Feeling: Ida Kohlmeyer in Two & Three Dimensions
Geometry with Feeling will feature the woÅrk of Ida Kohlmeyer (1912–1997), most recognized for her role in the vanguard of abstract painting in the American South. BRAHM is pleased to be exhibiting examples of her two and three-dimensional work in our Atwell Gallery at the start of the New Year 2023.

Taking up the brush during middle age, Kohlmeyer quickly developed a distinctive vocabulary of organic and geometric forms that she deployed with irrepressibly bright colors. While abstract expressionist painting is now fully integrated into the canon of American art, it was a controversial turn for an emerging New Orleans artist in the 1950s and 1960s. Despite this, Kohlmeyer pursued abstraction with an enduring desire to tease out the intellectual and emotional underpinnings of this frenetic approach to painting.

Transitive (1959), from BRAHM’s permanent collection, is an early, staid example of this abstract turn in the artist’s painting practice and serves as the impetus for this exhibition. Under the tutelage of Hans Hoffman and with significant influences from Mark Rothko and Arshile Gorky, this painting is a rare example of Kohlmeyer in her artistic adolescence. Geometry with Feeling will exhibit Transitive alongside more mature examples from the artist’s painting and sculptural practices to encourage audiences to think critically about the evolution of the artist’s recurring motifs and the refinement of her increasingly postmodern abstraction.
